Negative attitude, a phenomenon which can be stoped

Your work place is permanently hit by hostile behavior and negative attitude. No matter the source of the calamity howler, it’s up to you to help building a positive and productive atmosphere. As a manager, supervisor or team member as often as not you can’t control the situation which causes the negative attitude.
When you can do it, you’re amongst the lucky ones. For example, you heard some rumors regarding your company and you know that they are based on false information, incorrect assumption or deliberated misinformation. You can find out that some new politics and procedures may not be understood correctly. Employees can misinterpret a corporate announcement. A newsletter from the industry can refer to a problem that your company does not have. Maybe you’ve fired a person that propagated false information about the company. In every one of the cases mentioned above you control, partially, the information, the situation and the communication. You can solve the problem and can create relations so you can pass over the negative behavior.
Comprise in this process the employees who are closest to the source of the negative attitude. Identify all the possible causes. It’s not sufficient to say “in our company there is not enough enthusiasm”. You must identify the exact causes which propagates the lack of enthusiasm so you can have a chance in improving the situation. Involve as many people as you can in developing and implementing the plan. Quickly implement the chosen solutions then periodically verify if the plan works. In every stage of the process, you have to communicate as much information as you can about the negative attitude and the proper solutions.
But most often this type of attitude appears when the employees are affected by decisions and problems which they cannot control. For example: company reorganization, lack of personnel which often request for overtime, budget reduction, management decisions which have impact on the team members.
Here are some ideas which can help you in these situations:
-you must identify all the aspects that you can control in some way. Sometimes, decisions are made but no one sees or understands the results of such decisions. Think of the fact that you can influence a problem or a decision only by communicating frank;
-listen, listen, listen;
-do not allow false and negative information to propagate without stop; attack and ask for profs;
-ask public questions to determine the cause and the intention of the negative attitude and reactions;
-accept the fact that, sometimes, negative attitude can have positive effects.

Any intervention can be useful. The only thing that must be avoided is ignoring this phenomenon, as its effects both on short and long term can cost money, time and precious resources.
