Record Donations

I the mid December of 2009, Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia made a public call for the „community” to donate in order t keep the project going.

As everybody knows, Wikipedia.org doesn’t contain ads and lives only from donations and contributions of those who want everybody to have access to information: „Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. „

From the moment Wales made the appeal till now, meaning less than 8 weeks, 7,5 million dollars were collected which is extremely amazing considering the short period and the world’s economic situation.

Recently Google donated to Wikipedia 2 million dollars to improve infrastructure, buy new servers and routers, therefore streamlining traffic.

Wikipedia, the fifth most read site in the world lives with the help of 35 employees and 10 million dollars a year. Its base principle is that each one of the 340 million monthly users contribute continuously: One person writes something, somebody improves it a little, and it keeps getting better, over time. If you find it useful today, imagine how much we can achieve together in 5, 10, 20 years.
